The Indian government launched the SWAYAM initiative, which aims to accomplish the three main goals of the education policy: quality, equity, and access. Providing the greatest educational resources to everyone, including the most disadvantaged, is the aim of our endeavour. For students who have not yet been affected by the digital revolution and who are unable to enter the mainstream of the knowledge economy, SWAYAM aims to close the digital divide.
This is accomplished through a platform that makes it possible for all courses taught in classrooms starting in Class 9 and continuing through post-graduation to be hosted and accessed at any time, by anybody, anywhere. All of the interactive courses are offered to learners at no cost and are created by the top educators in the nation. Over a thousand carefully selected educators from all throughout the nation have contributed to the creation of these courses.
The courses offered on SWAYAM are divided into four sections: (1) video lectures; (2) readings that have been particularly prepared and can be printed or downloaded; (3) quizzes and tests for self-assessment; and (4) an online discussion forum for questions. Modern pedagogy and technology, along with audio-video and multi-media resources, have been employed to enhance the educational process.
In order to ensure that best quality content is produced and delivered, nine National Coordinators have been appointed. They are:
- AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) for self-paced and international courses
- NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) for Engineering
- UGC (University Grants Commission) for non technical post-graduation education
- CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) for under-graduate education
- NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for school education
- NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) for school education
- IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) for out-of-school students
- IIMB (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) for management studies
- NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research) for Teacher Training programme
The courses offered via SWAYAM are free for students to take; however, students who wish to receive a SWAYAM certificate must register for the final, paid proctored tests and show up in person on the prescribed times and at the approved centres. The course page will proclaim eligibility for the certificate, and students will only receive certificates if these requirements are met. The grades or certificates earned in these courses may be applied to universities or colleges that approve credit transfers for these courses.
The UGC (Credit Framework for online learning courses through SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 has already been released, and it instructs universities to designate courses for which credits can be transferred to students’ academic records for courses completed through SWAYAM. Additionally, the AICTE published a gazette notice in 2016 and later on about the implementation of these courses for credit transfer.
You can indicate your grievances related to Credit Transfer at your parent university by submitting them in this form.
The current SWAYAM platform is developed by Ministry of Education and NPTEL, IIT Madras with the help of Google Inc. and Persistent Systems Ltd.
